Week 16 – 2012

Week 16 finds us with a lot of fascinating story lines as well as a little leftover holiday shopping to do. With so much to do, a slow cooker recipe is what the doctor ordered. So without further ado, let’s dive in:

I love the madness swirling around the wild card seeds. There’s just enough going on to make it a nail biter which at this time of year is so much better than hearing about all the teams resting their starters as often happens. To the NFL – I read you want more playoff teams. PLEASE DON’T DO THIS! I DO NOT WANT OR NEED MORE PLAYOFF TEAMS WITH RECORDS BELOW 500. Yes, I feel that passionately about it.

Congrats to Megatron for his accomplishments in a loss last night. Detroit’s wide receiver Calvin Johnson broke the Madden curse and with one game to go set the following records:

1. Broke Jerry Rice’s record
2. Broke the record for consecutive 100-yard games
3. Set a record with his fourth consecutive 10-catch game
4. Tied Michael Irvin’s record of 11 100-yard games in a season

On a loosing team, fresh off signing a record contract and with so many other receivers on his team getting injured this man did not lower his goals. For not giving up and doing your best, my hat’s off to you for an amazing year. The only thing better would be you playing for our Pats.

Today’s game is in Jacksonville and it has all the hallmarks of a trap game. This weeks’ game is against on paper a loosing team that follows a tough loss in bad weather at home, the first December loss in 10 years, with a first half that we handed to the 49ers. Not taking anything away from their effort but a few fumbles off the box score and I suspect the first half would’ve been different.

I hope we run Ridley hard and work on ball security. Chad Henne could light up the day but if the last few games are any indication the Jags are a world of hurt right now. I will say regarding the Jags that I respect them not playing MJD for the last two games in a lost season now that he’s finally healthy. I hope they either get square with him or we get him as MJD is an amazing running back. The heart of the Jags offense for so many fruitless years.

I did mention today’s a day with a lot to do? In the spirit of the Jags game I’m setting up my crock pot with an easy orange chicken recipe.

One package of chicken thighs – between 2 & 3 pounds
3 tbsp flour
2/3 cup orange marmalade
2/3 cup of BBQ sauce – for this recipe I’m using a Sweet Baby Ray’s. I like a sweeter thick sauce to complement the marmalade.
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tbsp grated or diced fresh ginger root. I’m dicing it as I don’t have a grater.

Mix ingredients in slow cooker. add chicken and stir. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3 – 4 hours.

I’ll be having my chicken with a side of corn and brown rice. The chicken will fall right off the bone and the BBQ sauce make a great drizzle for the plated chicken and rice. For a beer, I’ll be enjoying mine with a Hooksett ale.

While I root for our Pats to not falter today I want to thank you for reading my blogs and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas. I hope you have a great celebration and of course a great beer too.
