Week 13 – post turkey day food and we travel to the land of cheese

Week 13 got here quick.  Seems like long ago that a reporter asked if Belichick was going to bench Brady.  Kinda foolish today isn’t it?  Same kind of foolish that has all the talking heads declaring this a super bowl preview and Brady vs Rogers.  Guess the rest of the teams don’t matter?  Last I checked it’s a team game and I’m hoping the Pats run game can exploit the Packs weakness against the run.

Mostly, I’m expecting to see a few Clay Mathews commercials and a ton of Peyton commercials. ……..  And a grind it out win.  Let’s face it, every time I can recall where two top offenses play each other it becomes a defensive showdown.  I expect this to be no different.  I’ll take a win any way the Pats want to though so go Offensive line GO!

So what’s to eat?

Glad you asked that question.  This year I went to family for turkey day and I have no leftovers.  My wife and I are making our own turkey and all the fixin’s.   Read on for the recipe thoughts.

turkey (768x1024)

Our bird is from Little Brook Farm out in Exeter.  It’s 18 pounds and is being cooked at 350 for 6 hours.  We did a dry herb and salt rub with Belgian Style Pale ale added to the pan as the key to our basting process.  We baste every 20 minutes.  Here I’m adding a bit more beer to the pan.  Smell’s amazing in here.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes
2lbs of red potatoes.
8 cloves of fresh garlic off the bulb
2 tablespoons of butter
1/4 cup of milk
2 tablespoons of sour cream

Cut potatoes into small 1/4 inch pieces.  Boil the potatoes till they are soft enough for a fork to gently go through.  Drain the water and set aside.  Mince garlic and sautee in butter till soft.  Add garlic and butter to potatoes, add milk and sour cream.  Using a hand mixer blend till it’s a smooth consistency.

1 pound of chopped bread.  I like to get a loaf of whatever looks interesting at the store.  Chop and let air dry for a day.
1/4 cup butter
1 onion diced
2 stalks celery, chopped
3/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/3 cup chicken broth

Stir all ingredients together.  Make sure the bread gets an even coating of broth.  Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.

Green Beans
Boiled for 5 minutes or till you like.  I like them warm but crunchy

I like the dark brown stuff in a jar.  Yeah, it’s salty and runs counter to the whole I made it theme here but hey, it’s my dinner and I like it.

Cranberry Sauce
Ocean Spray from the can.  Jellied, not whole cranberries.  And yes I’d like the end cut please.  It’s the best!

I’ll be enjoying my dinner with family and a Hop Session.  I have Tavern and DIPA on deck so it’s anyone’s call how long I’ll be awake tonight.  At least I’ll feel really full and happy.  Happier with a solid running win.  Hope you enjoy today’s games with friends, family, good food and of course great beer.
